Hollywood actresses pose make-up free for calendar
The latest Pirelli calendar hopes to free women from current beauty ideals.
The latest Pirelli calendar will feature make-up free Hollywood actresses in a bid to free women from current beauty ideals.
The 2017 calendar celebrates natural and mature beauty in "a cry against the terror of perfection and youth."
Far from the scantily clad models of the past, the latest edition features 14 acclaimed actresses spanning six decades in age, with Helen Mirren, 71, the eldest and Alicia Vikander, 28, the youngest.
All the stars involved in the 44th edition wore little to no make-up and the black and white images have not have not been airbrushed.
It is the third time photographer Peter Lindbergh has shot the Pirelli calendar. He says his focus was "not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion, stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked".
Speaking about being involved in the calendar, Julianne Moore, 55, said Lindbergh called her "perfect" when she walked into the shoot with no make-up on and wet hair.
The photographer says the 40 pictures featured show that "beauty is far more than what advertising offers us today" and portrays "women not in terms of their perfection, but through their feelings and emotions."
The full list of names involved are a who's who of Hollywood including Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Chastain and Lupita Nyong'o.
Lindbergh said they are all "actresses who've played an important role" in his life.
He said: "The ideal of perfect beauty promoted by society is something that simply can't be attained."
Nicole Kidman was the first actress to be shot for the calendar and told Lindbergh "no one has ever seen this part of me, and it's really beautiful".
The photographs were taken between May and June this year, across five different cities: Berlin, Los Angeles, New York, London and the beach at Le Touquet in France.
