Jimmy Perry, the actor and scriptwriter who created the iconic TV comedy Dad's Army, has died aged 93, the BBC reported.

Perry, who worked closely with producer David Croft, was also responsible for a string of other enduring classic British TV shows, such as It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Hi-de-Hi and You Rang M'Lord?

Dad's Army ran for 80 episodes over nine years from 1968, while Hi-de-Hi ran for eight years.

Perry was born in Barnes, south-west London in 1923. His experiences as a Home Guard during World War Two and as a Butlin's holiday camp Redcoat influenced his writing.
