Yoko Ono has been admitted to a New York hospital with a 'flu-like' illness, her representative has said.

The announcement came after local media reported the 83-year-old artist and widow of John Lennon had suffered a stroke - a claim which her publicist denied.

Elliott Mintz said Ono went to hospital on the advice of her doctor but is now on the mend and should be allowed home soon.

The couple's son Sean Ono Lennon said in a tweet that his mother was fine and did not suffer a stroke and was just suffering from dehydration.

Mount Sinai West, where Ono is being treated, is the same hospital where Lennon was pronounced dead.

At the time, it was called St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital.
