Five-minute interview: Anton Du Beke on Judy Murray and going true Scotsman
Anton Du Beke is ready to face the music and dance as new stage show with Erin Boag tours Scotland.
He's the cheeky chappy of ballroom and a firm favourite in the world of Strictly Come Dancing.
For the last 13 years, Anton Du Beke has been waltzing his way into the hearts of Strictly fans, dancing with celebrities like Judy Murray and making it to the final with Katie Derham.
Never one to take a break between Strictly stints, Anton is back on the road with Erin Boag, a former Strictly professional of ten years and his trusted dance partner since 1997.
Their latest tour Anton and Erin Just Gotta Dance is Scotland-bound, with stops in Dundee on March 4, Edinburgh on March 5 and Glasgow on March 6. We caught up with the Strictly star to find out what keeps him on his toes.
What are you most looking forward to about coming back to Scotland?
I always have a nice time in Scotland and I spent a lot of time up there when I was with Judy going back and forth. The people are so nice and we always have good audiences in Scotland.
Will you get a chance to pop in and visit Judy?
Yes, I will do. I shall go up and say 'hi' and I'll see the new bairn. Is that the word? See, I'm practically a local.
Do you have a favourite Ann Widdecombe dance moment?
We did a rumba together with the icebergs to My Heart Will Go On, that was one of my favourites.
Who is your most memorable Strictly partner?
I know it's not a very good answer but I've had so many brilliant partners. Judy, for example, was remarkable and Ann Widdecombe and people like Jerry Hall, I mean, what a legend she is.
Wonderful ladies I have danced with over the years. And then there was Katie this year as well.
You wore a kilt when performing with Judy Murray. Did you enjoy wearing it and did you go true Scotsman?
I did and it's very airy. I was absolutely true Scotsman. They were horrified when I told them but it was my homage to the Scots to be real and to be pure.
Have you ever given the Highland fling a go?
Not yet but I am going to try and work it out before Scotland and try a little bit up in Scotland.
We have to talk about your partnership with Katie and getting to the final. What did that feel like?
Oh, it was just brilliant, I was so pleased. Slightly exhausting, I'll tell you that much but, after all these years, I never thought it would happen really. And I know it shouldn't have mattered that much but it really did, I was really excited.
You sound like you're still buzzing from it a few months on?
Every time I talk about it, it makes me happy.
Is it true that you have a big birthday coming up (50) and do you have any extravagant plans for celebrating?
I have my 21st birthday coming up in July and I'm very excited, I'm going to dance the night away.
I've stopped thinking about birthdays quite a long time ago funnily enough. I don't like to consider them - they make me a little bit depressed. I avoid them like the plague.
Would you ever consider swapping the dance floor for a judge's seat if the opportunity ever came up?
Well I don't know really, I have never thought about it. I'll wait for them to ask and then I'll answer your question.
Now to find out about some of your Strictly favourites.
Tango or foxtrot?
Foxtrot.
Charleston or Jive?
Charleston.
Salsa or rumba?
Rumba.
Spray tan or sparkles?
Sparkles every time darling!
Jeremy Vine or John Sergeant for Strictly funnies?
Oh, I can't choose, they were both brilliant. Jeremy Vine was tremendous.
Who would win in a fight out of the judges?
Darcey.
What's the best dance you've ever done on Strictly?
The best thing I ever did on Strictly was something I did with Brucie, Me and My Shadow many years ago, and that's still my favourite moments.
What song always gets your feet moving?
New York, New York. Whenever you hear that go up, you just can't help yourself.
Who is your dancing idol?
Fred Astaire is my man. He is the man for me, old Fred.
Who is your favourite Strictly judge?
Oh I always love Len.
Before your dancing feet took you elsewhere, you were a baker. What's your speciality bake?
I used to be a very nice bread maker and I used to be quite good at fruit buns and all the different fruit loaves.
What can people expect from the 2016 tours -exciting numbers, glitter-tastic outfits, all of the above?
Yes and yes! Great numbers, great costumes, great songs and a bit of chat. You will certainly come out the theatre in a better mood than you went in.
What's strangest question you've been asked by an audience member at your show?
The other day I was asked what colour my toothbrush was and if I like electric or manual. I get proposals of marriage as well. Oh, and what sort of cheese I like.
After almost 20 years working together, you and Erin must rub each other up the wrong way occasionally?
Oh yeah absolutely, I think I am probably really irritating. The best way to overcome that is not to go home together, you see.
We have the perfect situation. I get on her nerves and then get in the car and go home, so it's perfect really.
