A bomb squad has locked down Burntisland Harbour in Fife following the discovery of an “unknown package” on an offshore drilling rig.

Emergency services were alerted at around 10.40pm on Monday.

Police said the cordon has been put in place while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team complete a more “thorough assessment of the circumstances".

There is not thought to be any threat to those onboard the rig in Methil.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report following the discovery of an unknown package on a drilling rig offshore at Methil, Leven, around 10.40pm on Monday.

"As a precaution, a cordon is currently in place at Burntisland Harbour, while emergency services and Explosive Ordnance Disposal complete a more thorough assessment of the circumstances.

“There is currently not thought to be any threat to anyone onboard the rig."
