A man has been injured after being attacked on an Edinburgh street.

The 36-year-old was on Clerk Street, Newington, when he became involved in an argument with two other men at around 7pm on Sunday.

During the altercation the men attacked the victim and left him with a serious arm injury.

The assault only ended when a passing taxi driver stopped to intervene and the suspects fled on foot towards Nicholson Street.

The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said enquires were ongoing and have asked anyone who witnessed the attack to contact them.

Detective Constable Iain Wallace, from Gayfield CID, said: "This assault happened in a busy area which at the time had a number of pedestrians and drivers passing by.

"We'd ask anyone who saw what happened, or the suspects afterwards, to contact police as soon as possible.

"We are grateful to the taxi driver for stopping to assist the victim at the scene, and I would appeal directly to him to come forward to assist with our inquiries.

"Anyone with information that can help us trace those responsible should contact officers immediately."
