Teen torched flat by forcing firework through letterbox
Jack Bonner has been jailed for almost six years after causing £43,000 of damage to the building.
A teenager who caused more than £40,000 worth of damage to a man's flat after forcing a lit firework through his letterbox has been jailed for almost six years.
Jack Bonnar, 19, ran away "celebrating" after starting the blaze in Lochgelly, Fife, which caused a block of flats to be evacuated and left homeowner Ross Quinn with a £43,000 repair bill.
During his trial the court heard that Bonner had earlier had an argument with Mr Quinn over an apparent debt he was owed.
Bonnar, who helped get himself caught after keeping a newspaper story about the crime, also robbed a petrol station at knifepoint after claiming he ran out of cigarettes.
On Tuesday Lord Arthurson sentenced him to a total of five years and eight months after he pled guilty to assault, robbery and wilful fire-raising.
On sentencing him the judge said: "This was offending of the utmost gravity."
A hearing was told how Bonnar turned up in a car at the block around 3am on November 6, 2017, before sparking the blaze by forcing the explosive device through Mr Quinn's letterbox.
The court heard that Bonnar then sprinted off "celebrating" after the incident.
The building was evacuated and suffered significant smoke damage before firefighters were able to put out the blaze.
Later that day Bonnar told his girlfriend what had happened after she heard about the incident on Facebook.
The teenager was later arrested but denied any involvement in the fire.
Two months later he raided a petrol station in Cowdenbeath, Fife, clutching a knife before threatening a shop worker, who initially thought it was a joke, and made off with £500.
After being caught for the robbery he claimed he had no cigarettes left that night and that was why he had gone to the petrol station.
