A man has died after being pulled unconscious from the sea at a beach.

Emergency services were called to the East Sands in St Andrews after a man was seen floating in the water at 8.25pm on Monday.

The man was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where he was later pronounced dead.

STV News understands he had no ID with him and officers are still trying to identify the man.

He is 5ft 3in, between 50 and 70 years old and has a tanned complexion.

The man has grey and black hair, a slight stubble and blue eyes.

Officers recovered a beach towel, a pink Cotton Traders polo shirt, George at Asda sunglasses and white Lonsdale trainers.

Inspector Christopher Mill said: "Our inquiries continue to establish the identity of the man and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have information that can assist us."
