The Edinburgh International Festival is bringing a series of music events to the Leith Theatre for the first time in thirty years.

Light on the Shore features 16 gigs across 14 nights in August to celebrate the creativity, originality and international impact of Scottish popular music.

The theatre is currently undergoing renovations to bring the performance space back to life and has recently been hailed as one of the best venues in Scotland.

Artists booked to appear include the Jesus and Mary Chain, Mogwai, King Creosote, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Joan as Policewoman.

Organisers say the festival programme reflects "the ambition, diversity and independence of music-making in Scotland, and its interconnectivity with artists and audiences at home and throughout the world".

In a statement, they added: "Leith is a cultural Mecca and Edinburgh International Festival aims to leave a legacy for the community; opening doors and bringing people together through a unifying love and appreciation of music.

"As an ethos, community is a vital part of Scotland, both in landscape and in the musical industry.

"Many of the bands that are programmed will have found their band mates, collaborators and colleagues in Scottish communities like Leith.

"With that, Light on the Shore aims to celebrate the art of community, collaboration and music-making, embracing the synergy of the Scottish music scene."
