Grey seal released after delay by 'beast from the east'
The Scottish SPCA is caring for 30 seals as a result of the extreme weather.
A grey seal has been released back into the wild after being delayed by the "beast from the east".
The seal, named Ken, was rescued in Dunbar, East Lothian, after being found very thin and wounded.
After being treated by the Scottish SPCA, he was moved into one of the large outdoor pools with other seals until he reached a healthy release weight.
However, due to the bad weather conditions, his release was delayed.
Centre manager Colin Sneddon said the weather has resulted in a high number of seals and hedgehogs being kept at the centres longer than they should be.
"We're still caring for 30 grey seals at the moment which is very unusual for this time of year.
"The bad weather has delayed the release of a number of animals including hedgehogs. But also the arrival of many too."
Mr Sneddon said the centres are now preparing to cope with the high number of seals and hedgehogs, as well as an influx of baby birds arriving as the weather improves.
"If anyone discovers a baby animal, that is not in immediate danger, please don't touch them.
"Observe from a distance to ensure their parents do not return and call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999 for advice.
"Whilst we are fully equipped to care for Scotland's wild animals, they are best to be raised by their parents."
Anyone who discovers an injured or distressed wild animal should call the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
