A Leith youngster has won a national award for his charity project to help the homeless.

Joseph Cox, 11, was heartbroken by the increasing number of rough sleepers in his local area, and took action by creating Socks for the Street.

His charity project collects and donates new socks, underwear, gloves and other vital warm clothing to homeless people.

With his school, Leith Primary, acting as a drop-off point for donations, Joseph has managed to help many homeless people in Edinburgh, often on the spot as he carries clothing with him at all times.

He initially set a target of 300 pairs of socks, but to date the project has received more than 2000 pairs of socks as well as more than 1000 pairs of underwear, 25 sleeping bags and items like hats and scarves.

His Facebook page Socksforthestreet has attracted attention from far and wide, and he also uses an Amazon wish list for donations.

Leith Rotary spotted the kind youngster's activities and put him forward for the Rotary Young Citizen Awards.

Rotary president Denis Spiller said: "Joseph is a real inspiration to us all.

"He saw a problem and got on with fixing it.

"He has, literally, brought warmth into peoples' lives as well as made them feel valued."
