A man smashed cars and attacked police officers with a metallic baseball bat during a drunken rampage.

Jamie Simeon, 41, was at home with his partner drinking alcohol and taking cocaine when he received a phone call from someone unknown which caused him to become agitated and leave the house.

At 10.45am a taxi driver on Stenhouse Drive in Edinburgh saw Simeon "angrily" swinging the bat.

He struck the windscreen of the car, shattering the glass, which struck the taxi driver on the face.

Simeon then ran down the street smashing the windows of a further four vehicles.

When police officers arrived they saw Simeon armed with a large bat.

Fiscal depute Lorna Ferrier said: "The accused ran over to the police vehicle and smashed the bat straight through the driver's window, showering the officers with glass".

Ms Ferrier said he continued to try and strike the officers with the bat and a spray was used, but had no effect.

A member of the public, who had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, had witnessed what was happening and prepared to set his dog on the accused to help the police.

Simeon struck the dog with full force on the head, causing it to fall over and suffer a bleeding nose.

Two more officers that arrived on the scene were then attacked.

Simeon pleaded guilty at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday to a total of 13 charges that occurred on April 22, 2017.

Sentencing was deferred until March.
