A prisoner who escaped from the back of a G4S van has been found following a major search.

Conlon Carr broke free from the vehicle as he was being taken to St Leonards Police Station in Edinburgh.

The 19-year-old escaped shortly before midday, leading to a major search operation being launched in the city.

A helicopter was called in to scour the area around Arthur's Seat as police sought to trace him.

Police Scotland said Carr was found near Craigmillar Castle around 2.25pm.

The force said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Willie Galloway, operations director at G4S, said: "A person in our care managed to escape from custody officers while being escorted back on to a prison vehicle and has now been re-apprehended.

"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will take appropriate action as required."
