A police dog has helped rescuers find an elderly woman who fell down a hill while gardening in woods behind her house.

The alarm was raised by the 80-year-old woman's family on Thursday evening after she was last seen at her home in Bathgate, West Lothian, at about 4.50pm.

Police were called out to search the area around Rosemount Court after her family could not locate her.

As light was fading, a police German Shepard named Boris was able to sniff out the woman, who had fallen down a steep embankment.

Emergency services were able to reach her and she was taken to hospital as a precaution but is not thought to have been injured.

A police spokeswoman said: "We received a call around 5.25pm on Thursday following reports of an 80-year-old woman missing from her home, last seen around 4.50pm.

"Officers attended along with PD Boris.The lady was located around 6.50pm.

"She had gone out to through her back garden into a wooded area.

"She said she had gone out to do some gardening and had slipped."
