A blaze at a historic former school in Fife has been brought under control.

Emergency services were called to the old Viewforth High School on Loughborough Road, Kirkcaldy, at around 5.40pm on Monday.

Police said the fire was started deliberately.

The building is currently up for sale and is owned by the council, who are currently trying to asses the extent of the damage.

Detective inspector Paul Dick, of Kirkcaldy CID, said: "Significant damage has been caused to this listed building and inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

"We are already following a number of positive lines of inquiry, however I would urge anyone with information to contact Kirkcaldy CID immediately on 101, quoting incident number 3032 of 2 October, or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

At the height of the blaze, 18 firefighters and two height appliances tackled the flames at the C-listed building.

The fire was extinguished shortly after 10pm on Monday but firefighters remained at the scene on Tuesday morning.

Pupils were moved to a new school on Windmill Road in 2016.
