A car was found submerged in a river, sparking a major search.

The discovery was made in the River Tay in Perth shortly after 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The Renault was spotted by a worker at a nearby sewage plant.

Officers have spoken to the owner after nobody was found in the car.

Search teams were called to the incident, including a coastguard helicopter.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are satisfied the car was not stolen and we are trying to ascertain how the vehicle ended up in the water."
