A large fire broke out in a building in Edinburgh on Monday afternoon.

Just before 3pm, emergency services were called to attend the blaze in Stockbridge.

Five appliances attended the scene, as smoke billowed out the building, believed to be the Nira Caledonia hotel.

A Scottish fire and rescue spokesman said: "At 2.50pm on Monday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a fire in the roof space of a business premises on Gloucester Place in Edinburgh.

"A total of five appliances attended and crews extinguished the fire using high-powered hoses.

"There were no casualties and firefighters ensured the area was safe before leaving the scene."

Local residents reported hearing a loud bang just before the fire started.

A police spokesman said: "Police officers are currently assisting Scottish fire and rescue with a hotel fire in Gloucester Place, Edinburgh.

"Roads in area closed, please avoid."

The hotel posted on twitter confirming that all staff and guests had been evacuated.

They added: "Fire under control. All guests and staff evacuated. Everyone accounted for. Update in due course."
