Schoolchildren were kept indoors after a huge blaze ripped through a neighbouring bowling club.

The fire happened at Denbeath Bowling Club in Buckhaven, Fife, at 12.35pm on Wednesday.

Homeowners were asked to keep their windows closed while police closed roads in the area following the blaze next to Denbeath Primary School.

Around 40 firefighters were called to tackle the flames.

Officers are treating the building fire, which included a miners welfare institute, as deliberate.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Officers assisted with local traffic management and members of the public were advised to avoid the area, where possible, and keep their windows and doors closed due to the volume of smoke.

"Enquiries are continuing with our colleagues in the fire service to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident, which is currently being treated as wilful fire-raising."
