Sprinkler system not fitted on 48 city tower blocks
Edinburgh Napier University removed cladding from halls of residence last week.
More than 40 tower blocks in Edinburgh do not have a sprinkler system which could help save lives, a new investigation has revealed.
Tests have been carried out by local authorities across the country in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, which killed at least 80 people.
Last week, Edinburgh Napier University announced it would remove cladding from Bainfield Halls in Fountainbridge following the London tragedy.
Figures obtained by BBC Scotland showed 48 blocks in the capital are without the system.
Since 2005, the law has required local authorities to install sprinklers within new tower blocks.
A senior firefighter said sprinklers were a "proven" way to prevent the spread of fire in buildings and could "drastically reduce the threat to life".
Dave Curry, chief officer for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, told the BBC: "Time and again, sprinklers have been proven to prevent the spread of fire in buildings and drastically reduce the threat to life."
