A convicted murderer allegedly stabbed and slashed another inmate during a brawl in a prison.
Officers were forced to intervene after a fight broke out in Saughton Prison, Edinburgh.
James McDonald, who was jailed for 35 years in 2008, allegedly stabbed the man in the stomach before slashing his face.
The victim was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following the incident earlier this month.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesman confirmed a weapon had been involved.
McDonald was one of two people found guilty of the murder of 21-year-old Michael Lyons at the Applerow Motors garage in the Possil area of north Glasgow.
The murder was described as a "cold-blooded, premeditated assassination".
He was also jailed over the attempted murder of Steven Lyons, 27, and 42-year-old Robert Picket.
