National music school campaign in call for support
St Mary's pupils aim to move into former Royal High School on Calton Hill.
A new campaign seeking support for the creation of Scotland's national music school in Edinburgh has been launched.
Ambitious plans would take the country's only independent music school, St Mary's, from its current home on Grosvenor Crescent in Haymarket to the former Royal High School at the foot of Calton Hill.
Councillors backed proposals to transform the A-listed neoclassical building last year but developers aiming to build a luxury hotel on the site are fighting the decision.
The Perfect Harmony campaign wants music fans to show their backing for the project, which would turn the former debating chamber into three performance spaces and a 300-seat concert hall.
Pupils lent their backing to the campaign, as did head teacher Dr Kenneth Taylor.
The Royal High School Preservation Trust's (RHSPT) fully-funded proposals for the music school would result in the new facilities being made available to the public as well as pupils.
