A man has died and a woman is in hospital with serious injuries after being mowed down by a car on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a blue Mini on the B800 near Dalmeny at around noon on Monday.

A woman, who was also hit by the car, has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where her condition is described as "serious".

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Road policing sergeant Denise Humphrey said: "Sadly a man has lost his life in this incident and a woman is in a serious condition in hospital.

"I would ask anyone with information who has not already spoken to us, to please get in touch."
