A teenager is facing trial accused of murdering a former junior football player on New Year's Day.

Shaun Woodburn, 30, died after a disturbance broke out on Great Junction Street in Leith, Edinburgh, in the early hours of January 1.

A 16-year-old boy from Edinburgh, who cannot be named for legal reasons, previously appeared in court charged with murder.

On Wednesday, the teenager's case called again at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, where he was fully committed for trial.

The youth appeared in private before Sheriff Pamela Bowman and was remanded in custody.

A second teenager, 18-year-old Mohammed Zakariyah, also from the capital, has been charged with assault to injury and an offence under the Criminal Justice Licensing (Scotland) Act.

In addition, a 31-year-old man was charged with possessing an offensive weapon in relation to the incident in Leith on January 1.

Mr Woodburn, who played for junior football team Bonnyrigg Rose for three years, was described as a "true gentleman" and "fantastic and loving" father who "didn't have a bad word to say about anyone".
