Scottish anti-terrorism police are investigating the funding of a Kurdish militia.

Officers in Edinburgh have been leading a joint investigation with partner agencies into claims that a number of individuals in Scotland were involved in the financing of the terror group

Police say they have carried out a number of raids as part of the financial probe, which includes allegations of fraud, and a report has now been handed to prosecutors.

It is understood the investigation centred on the PKK, known as the Kurdistan Workers' Party, who are based in Turkey and Iraq.

The PKK is a left wing organisation which, since 1984, has led an armed struggle against the Turkish state for equal rights for Kurds.

A senior Scots anti-terror officer involved in the investigation in Edinburgh has reassured the public that no-one was in danger at any time.

Detective Chief Superintendent Gerry McLean, head of Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "As part of a police investigation along with partner agencies, we executed a number of search warrants in relation to financial investigation and suspected fraud.

"Matters have now been reported to the procurator fiscal, and as such it would be inappropriate comment further at this time.

"I would like to reassure the public that there was no danger to them at any time."
