No criminal charges will be brought over the death of a 12-year-old girl who was crushed by a wall at an Edinburgh school.

Keane Wallis-Bennett died after a freestanding wall fell on her as she changed for PE at Liberton High on April 1, 2014.

Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive launched an investigation into the S1 pupil's death and Edinburgh City Council carried out urgent structural checks across the school estate.

The Crown Office announced on Thursday that no criminal proceedings would be brought in relation to the incident. It will revisit that decision if other evidence comes to light, however.

A fatal accident inquiry will be held to establish the full circumstances of the case.

A spokesman for the Crown Office said: "Crown counsel have decided that it is in the public interest to hold a fatal accident inquiry to examine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic death to help avoid such an incident happening again in the future.

"The fatal accident inquiry will have an opportunity to consider the safety of internal freestanding walls."

A date for the inquiry will be set at a later date.

Keane was described by her family as their "princess who dreamed of being Prime Minister" and that she loved her friends, music and "all things girly".
