Remembrance wreaths have been removed from a city war memorial and replaced with a makeshift shrine.

Five wreaths disappeared from Prestonfield War Memorial in Edinburgh over the weekend.

Candles, photographs, spoons and coffee were put on the base of the structure in their place.

The incident has baffled local residents, who have contacted police.

Southside/Newington councillor Cameron Rose said: "While we all understand this may be an unusual act of remembrance, I would like to see the five missing remembrance wreaths returned to their rightful place.

"A local constituent tells me nothing like this has happened at this memorial going right back to the 1950s.

"About 100 people were there on Remembrance Sunday to pay respect to those who had died and the names local people we read out."

A police spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh were alerted to the Prestonfield War Memorial at around 1pm on Sunday after Remembrance wreaths were removed without permission.

"Inquiries into the full set of circumstances are ongoing, however, it is believed they were removed overnight between Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19.

"Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101."
