More than 30 cars have been damaged in Edinburgh in what police are calling a "malicious and extensive act of vandalism".

The incidents occurred overnight between Sunday and Monday across the north of the city, with damage to cars reported in Granton, Boswall, Trinity and Hawthornvale.

Each of the targeted cars either had their windows smashed or an attempt was made to smash them.

Officers from Police Scotland have spoken to a number of victims and conducted an extensive check of CCTV in the areas affected.

Inquiries are ongoing and police are now following a positive line of investigation.

Although more than 30 incidents have been reported, police believe more cars may have been targeted and they have encouraged victims to come forward.

Inspector Shane McKenna of Drylaw police station said: "We have had a number of people come forward regarding these incidents but we believe there are more people affected who have not contacted police.

"Let me be clear, this is not just a minor matter. This was a malicious and extensive act of vandalism on people's property and it will not be tolerated.

"If you have been affected, or know someone who has been, please contact us. By doing so you will help us build a case against those responsible and bring them to justice."
