An ambulance has been involved in a smash with two cars while responding to an emergency near a sports centre in Dunfermline.

The emergency vehicle was travelling along Pilmuir Street in the Fife town with its blue lights and sirens on when the crash took place at 12.40pm on Wednesday.

The driver of the ambulance and the driver of a Toyota Yaris were taken to hospital.

It is understood that they suffered minor injuries.

The area around Carnegie Leisure Centre was closed while the fire service and police attended.

Carnegie Drive was closed eastbound and Pilmuir Street was closed southbound until 2.50pm.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A frontline ambulance was responding to an category A emergency call in Dunfermline at 12:34 with its blue lights and sirens activated when it was involved in a road traffic accident with two other vehicles.

"Another ambulance was immediately sent to original call and another tasked to take a patient from the scene to hospital with minor injuries.

"We also requested help from the police and fire service."
