A 47-year-old man has died after his van collided with a wall and overturned in a Midlothian village.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after emergency services were called to the incident in Howgate at around 3.40pm on Saturday.

His red Citroen Berlingo van struck a dry stone wall on the A6094 in the Howgate area and was flipped over.

A 14-year-old male passenger was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precaution.

The road was closed in both directions until around 8.30pm so officers could conduct investigations at the scene.

Sergeant Neil Inglis said: "Inquiries into this collision continue and our sincere condolences remain with the family of the driver at this very difficult time.

"We've spoken to a number of people so far but anyone who witnessed this and who has not yet been in touch is urged to come forward."
