A man and a woman have been charged with trafficking "vulnerable victims"sex workers in Edinburgh.

The 40-year-old man and 32-year-old woman are alleged to have trafficked individuals in the city's Gorgie for the purposes of prostitution.

They are expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in November to face charges.

The arrests were made after police in the city conducted a "day of action" to raise awareness of human trafficking.

Detective chief inspector Alwyn Bell said: "Human trafficking is very much hidden but is happening within Edinburgh.

"Individuals often don't see themselves as victims, which is why we will proactively seek to identify them through visits like on Tuesday's day of action.

"Our focus continues on the identification and protection of these vulnerable victims. We are determined to improve the intelligence picture in order to gain a better understanding of trafficking in Scotland and the organised crime groups who are involved.

"We will target those who control, abuse and exploit others to ensure that Scotland is a hostile environment to this sickening trade."
