A woman has died after the car she was driving left the road and crashed into a tree in West Lothian.

She was trapped in the silver Citroen DS3 following the crash on Wester Breich Road in West Calder, at about 1.10am on Saturday.

An emergency crew from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service removed her from the vehicle but she was declared dead by paramedics at the scene. No other cars were involved in the incident.

Sergeant Neil Inglis of the Road Policing Unit said: "The woman's next of kin have been informed and our condolences are with them at this very difficult time.

"Our investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision continues, and we'd ask anyone who can help to come forward.

"Anyone who may have witnessed this collision, or who saw the Citroen beforehand, is urged to get in touch as soon as possible."
