A former RBS bank in the centre of Edinburgh will be transformed into serviced apartments as part of the wider regeneration of the area.

The new lease of life for the property is the latest in a series of developments in St Andrew Square.

Named the Edinburgh Grand, the Lateral City Apartments development will be made up of 50 luxury apartments.

Local restaurant Bon Vivant will run a coffee house and evening venue, while the former banking hall will be transformed into a bar and restaurant seating 200 people.

The building will also accommodate a small number of shops.

Gavin MacLennan, general manager of Lateral City Apartments, said: "42 St Andrew Square is a building full of history and heritage, and after years of being closed off to the general public, we are extremely excited to be working on what will become the pride of the city when complete."

The firm, which already operates Old Town Chambers and Merchiston Residence in the city, is working with developers the Chris Stewart Group and hopes to open its latest venture next summer.

Karen Brown, interior designer with the Chris Stewart Group, said: "The building is brimming with original features from the monumental entrance doors featuring heraldic emblems, marble clad walls and ornate cornicing, to the bronze balustrade lining the atrium, all of which we'll be incorporating into our final designs."

The neo-classical building was initially built between 1936 and 1942, inspired by modernist American architecture.

Details of the development were announced as construction continues on a £75m office and retail complex on the south side of the square.

The Chris Stewart Group is also behind plans to pedestrianise nearby West Register Street, improve lighting, street furniture and greenery and attract retailers to the area.
