A woman has died after she was struck by a car which was being chased by police.

The 33-year-old, named locally as mother-of-one Jill Pirrie, was hit by a silver Ford Ka on the A7 Old Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh, on Thursday night.

Officers had activated the siren and flashing lights after the Ford failed to stop when signalled to do so.

STV News understands that the chase started near the Fort Kinnaird retail park before the collision took place at around 8pm.

Ms Pirrie, who has a young son, is understood to have been making her way home from nearby Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where she worked as a nurse.

Old Dalkeith Road remained closed between Craigmillar Castle Road and Walter Scott Avenue on Friday morning while forensic investigations were carried out.

Officers have been seen searching gardens in neighbouring streets.

Locals told STV News they had been told that two young men were seen lying on the ground being treated by paramedics after the incident.

One woman, who declined to be identified, said: "It was mayhem here last night. We had a police helicopter flying around until about 3am or 4am in the morning. It's a shame, very sad."

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: "We have heard there were two other young guys in the car and the police were looking for them."

Police watchdog Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) confirmed that it would carry out an investigation into the incident.

A spokeswoman for PIRC said: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed the PIRC to carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances leading up to the incident.

"PIRC investigators attended the scene in the early hours of the morning and a report will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."

A police spokesman said: "Enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing.

"Anyone with information about this collision is asked to contact officers on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
