A man is in hospital with serious head injuries after a "random" attack on a city street.

A passer-by raised the alarm after seeing a man and a woman assaulting the victim on Rossie Place, off Easter Road in Edinburgh, at around 1.40am on Sunday.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he continues to be treated for serious head injuries.

The first suspect is described as a white man in his mid-20s, 6ft 4in with a muscular build, short mousey brown hair and thick stubble.

He was wearing a light-coloured T-shirt and jeans.

The second suspect is believed to be a white woman in her mid to 20s, 5ft 7in tall with shoulder-length curly blonde hair.

It is believed the pair entered a Range Rover vehicle as they left the area.

Detective constable Iain Wallace said: "This appears to be a random assault, which has left the victim with no recollection of what happened and as such, we are keen to speak to anyone who can help us establish the full circumstances.

"Anyone who was on Rossie Place in the early hours of Sunday morning and who saw anything suspicious should contact police immediately."

Witnesses can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
