Church to be transformed into £1.8m performing arts centre
The conversion of the listed building was granted over a rival proposal for a pub.
A historic church in Edinburgh city centre will be transformed into a performing arts complex.
Councillors have paved the way for the £1.8m project at the former Charlotte Baptist Chapel on Rose Street.
The major conversion of the listed building was granted over a rival proposal to create a pub and restaurant at the site.
Under the plans, tabled by ballet director Peter Schaufuss, the building will become home to a 623-seat theatre, exhibition space, museum and ballet school dance studio. A cafe, bar and box office will also be created in the ground floor.
The development has reportedly been backed by high-profile arts personalities including ballet star Darcey Bussell and actress Felicity Kendal.
It was also supported by local heritage group the Cockburn Association, and the West End and New Town and Broughton community councils.
