Structural surveys will be carried out at Edinburgh schools after a building was badly damaged during Storm Gertrude.

Engineers will carry out the precautionary inspections following the incident at Oxgangs Primary at the end of January. Outer cladding was ripped off a wall as high winds battered Scotland.

Immediately after the storm, structural engineers visited all 16 schools built through the city’s public-private partnership project around a decade ago.

The initial checks did not raise any concerns but experts have recommended structural surveys take place as a precaution.

Parents of pupils at the affected schools were informed of the move in a letter on Wednesday. The inspections will be carried out over the coming weeks.

Education convener Paul Godzik said: "Immediate action was taken following the incident and structural engineers carried out initial checks at all the Edinburgh schools that were built at the same time as Oxgangs.

"However, health and safety is given the very highest priority so we have instructed the Edinburgh Schools Partnership to arrange for these additional surveys to take place.

"Parents have been informed of the decision and reassured that any disruption during the checks will be kept to a minimum."

Work will take place at Pirniehall; St David’s RC; Broomhouse; St Joseph’s RC; Craigroyston; Craigour Park; St Peter’s RC; Forthview, and Castleview primaries, and Firrhill; Craigmount; Drummond; Gracemount, and Royal high schools, and Braidburn and Rowanfield special schools.
