Homes have been flooded and dozens of other properties were without water in West Lothian due to a burst main.

A total of 12 homes in the Wester Inch area of Bathgate were flooded after the main burst on Wednesday morning, and surrounding roads were also affected.

Properties in Bathgate, Blackburn, and Livingston were left without water and several afternoon sessions at nearby nurseries were cancelled.

It is understood this is the second time in three years that the Wester Inch area has flooded. Up to 30 people are believed to have been evacuated.

Emergency services and Scottish Water teams worked at the scene throughout the day to deal with the problem.

Scottish Water confirmed at around 4.30pm on Wednesday that it had restored normal water supplies after isolating the burst in the Meikle Inch Lane.

Engineers have been assisting customers of the 12 properties which were affected by localised flooding.

Mark McEwen, Scottish Water’s customer service general manager, said: "We fully appreciate that the flooding has affected a number of properties in the area and we are doing everything we can to help with the clean-up of customers’ property.

"We are taking all necessary action and providing any support that is required to these customers and we will continue to do so.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank affected customers for their patience and understanding."

A council spokesman said: "The council has been assisting the emergency services with the incident. Scottish Water, the police, the fire and rescue service and Sepa are at the site.

"The water supply issue is also affecting Blackburn and we have had reports of issues concerning water pressure in Deans, Whitburn and Armadale.

"Council staff are assisting the emergency services and have provided sandbags.

"The afternoon sessions at the following nurseries have been cancelled: Simpson Primary School; Highfield Nursery, Blackburn; Murrayfield Primary, Blackburn. Simpson Primary School at Wester Inch is open."
