Two women have died after being pulled from the sea at a beach.

Emergency services were called to Aberdeen beach at 12.45am on Friday.

Two women were pulled from the water but were later pronounced dead.

A stretch of the beach has been cordoned off while investigations are carried out.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "There are no further details available just now and our thoughts are with the individuals' families and friends at this sad time.''

A coastguard spokesman added: "Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and units from the Scottish Ambulance Service were tasked.

"One female was located and recovered from the water by Aberdeen inshore lifeboat and transferred to the all weather boat.

"The other was then recovered by the ILB and both boats then proceeded back to the lifeboat pontoon and the casualties transferred to the awaiting ambulances."
