A person is fighting for their life after a three-car crash on the A9.

The smash happened at Evanton in the Highlands shortly after midday on Wednesday.

Major delays are being caused with tailbacks stretching for miles.

An air ambulance was also called to the crash.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "The A9 remains closed at Evanton following an RTC earlier this afternoon.

"A diversion is in place via the unclassified road between Dingwall and Evanton.

"This is currently extremely busy due to the volume of traffic. The road is also not suitable for HGVs.

"Officers are currently managing traffic on the diversion.

"We are asking anyone who intends to travel through the area or via the diversion to delay their journey if at all possible to minimise any further disruption."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We received a call at 12.04pm to attend a road traffic collision on the A9 in Evanton.

"We dispatched three ambulances, an air ambulance and a basics doctor to the scene."
