Scotland is bracing itself for the hottest day in five years as temperatures could reach up to 30C.

Warm air from Africa is expected to bring record-breaking temperatures to parts of the country.

Aviemore and Braemar are set to be the hottest places in Scotland on Wednesday.

Both areas are expected to reach 30C as warm air from the Sahara is set to bring the warmest weather since July 2013.

Glasgow and Drumnadrochit in Loch Ness will also be among the hottest places in Scotland, reaching 29C.

At 9am, temperatures had already reached 20C in some areas as the air continues to get warmer.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: "Just after 9am, some parts of the country were already touching 20C in what is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far.

"Central and eastern areas of the country woke up to a lot of low cloud and haar which has mostly burnt off during the morning to leave plenty of sunshine.

"In these areas, temperatures have started off in the low teens although these will rise quickly as the sun breaks through."

The warm weather means Scotland could be looking at its hottest June since 1995.

Sean added: "Temperatures will get close to 30C in some spots today and perhaps even reach that figure in a few areas which would be the highest temperature recorded in five years.

"Pollen levels will be very high and UV levels are now at the extreme end of the scale for Scotland meaning there is a significant sunburn risk."

Rail passengers have been warned of travel disruption due to the sweltering heat.

In recent days, speed restrictions have been put in place due to the expansion of rails caused by the heat.

A ScotRail spokesman said: "Network Rail will be working hard to protect the infrastructure but there may be disruption to the network."
