Six people have been taken to hospital following a three-vehicle crash on the A9.

The collision took place outside Dunkeld, Perthshire, at around 3pm on Tuesday.

Four ambulances and a number of fire engines were called to the scene.

Six people were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but injuries are not yet known.

The A9 is shut between Birnam and Little Dunkeld in both directions and police officers say it could be closed for some time.

A diversion has been put in place on the A923 through the town of Dunkeld to clear congestion.

Traffic Scotland advise drivers to avoid the area if possible and expect delays.

Scottish Citylink buses have suspended all of their services running between Perth and Inverness.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 2.33pm to attend a road traffic incident on the A9 near Dunkeld.

We dispatched four ambulances, a trauma team and a Special Operations Response Team to the scene, and six patients were transported to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were alerted at 2.31pm on May 22 to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on the A9 near Dunkeld.

"Operations Control immediately mobilised a number of fire engines.

"Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe."

Emergency services are still at the scene.
