A huge fire has destroyed an auctioneer's building with up to £50,000 worth of goods inside.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of Friday morning at Iain M Smith Auctioneers, which is based at Perth Airport.

A 400-year-old map of Scotland, antique furniture and jewellery were among the lots which were lost in the fire.

Firefighters battled the blaze for around five hours before it was brought under control.

Crews remain at the scene to dampen down the remains of the building.

The firm's owner said the saleroom had been completely destroyed ahead of an auction which had been due to take place on Friday, with around 1100 lots on offer.

Mr Smith told STV News: "It would have been our biggest sale in a few years.

"I'm just devastated that the whole thing is gone.

"We've traded for 21 years on this site."

He said he hopes to operate from another building in around two weeks, but all the items contained in the saleroom at the time of the fire was lost.

The stock would have been worth between £40,000 and £50,000, he said.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 12.20am on Friday, March 9 to reports of a fire within a commercial premise.

"Operations Control immediately mobilised a number of fire engines to the unit at Perth Aerodrome, Scone, where firefighters extinguished the fire.

"There are no casualties.

"Crews remain on the scene dampening down until the area is made safe."
