Parts of Aberdeenshire experienced their coldest night in five years with a low of -9.4C in Aboyne.

The coldest part of Scotland on Sunday night and Monday morning was Strathallan in Perthshire, where lows of -9.8C were recorded.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: "Cold spells this winter have been a bit more frequent compared to recent winters so far and some areas have experienced their lowest temperatures in several years.

"Edinburgh, Glasgow and Renfrewshire had their coldest weather since 2010 back in early December when the temperature dropped to -8C.

"Last night the temperature at Bishopton, Renfrewshire, dropped to its second lowest since 2010, with a low of -6.2C."

He added: "Both Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport reported a low of -9C this morning.

"Aboyne in Aberdeenshire had its coldest night for nearly five years with a low of -9.4C. Leuchars, Fife, dipped close to -8C this morning.

"The coldest spot this morning was Strathallan, where the mercury dropped to -9.8C just before 9am."

Sean said the forecast for the week ahead is mixed.

"This week, Scotland will sit in the battleground between cold air to the east over Scandinavia and warmer and wetter conditions in the Atlantic," he said.

"Temperatures will recover a little in the next few days with some patchy light rain and hill snow. Temperatures will still be low tonight but not as low as the last few nights.

"A frost is also still likely where cloud breaks during the middle of the week but again the temperature won't be as severe."

He added: "Longer term, it's a little tricky to say whether the cold Scandinavian air or the Atlantic warmer air will win out but at this stage the majority of forecast computer models favour a return to milder air as we move through January."
