A batch of Dunsyre Blue cheese has been recalled after bacteria which can cause meningitis was detected within.

The Errington Cheese product is said to contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which causes symptoms similar to flu and can be dangerous to elderly people, pregnant woman, babies and anyone with a low immune system.

Customers who have recently purchased the cheese have been advised not to eat it and instead return it to the shop it was bought in for a full refund.

Errington Cheese Ltd is voluntarily recalling the affected product from its customers.

A point of sale notice will be sent to all businesses that sell the products, explaining to customers the reason for recall and the actions they can take if they have bought any of the affected product.

The company has also taken steps to withdraw the product from sale after it was notified by a wholesaler about the bacteria detected.

Symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes includes high temperature, muscle ache or pains, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

People over the age of 65, pregnant woman, unborn babies, newborn babies and people with weakened immune systems will be more vulnerable to Listeria infections.
