MSPs were evacuated from their offices in the Scottish Parliament after suspect packages containing white powder were discovered on Tuesday.

Three packages were sent to Conservative politicians on Tuesday, with one being opened by a member of staff from Jamie Halcro Johnston MSP's office.

Halcro Johnston was not in the room when it was opened.

The evacuation lasted for around two hours before it was declared as resolved.

Both police and the fire service attended the incident .

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh responded to the Scottish Parliament at around 11.35am on Tuesday 7th November following the discovery of a suspicious package.

"The building has been evacuated as a precaution and inquiries are continuing."

In an email to all of Holyrood's users, a spokesman for the Scottish Parliament said: "The emergency services have confirmed the incident is now resolved.

"Parliamentary business as well as all tours and events will go ahead as planned this afternoon.

"The MSP block is now open and Members and their staff can return to their offices.

"The Scottish Parliament building remains open to the public."
