A man has been jailed for 27 years for the murder of an ex-Royal Navy officer he ran over as he stole his car in a botched robbery.

Ryan Gibbons, 29, was accused of twice running over Mike Samwell, 35, outside his home in Chorlton, South Manchester in April.

Mr Samwell suffered fatal injuries to his heart and chest and was pronounced dead in hospital.

Gibbons was found guilty of murder by a jury at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday.

He had pleaded guilty to burglary and aggravated vehicle taking but denied murder.

Raymond Davies, 21, from Manchester, who drove Gibbons to the address to steal the car, was convicted of manslaughter, burglary and taking a vehicle without consent.
