American actor Chris Pine has been spotted in Glasgow as filming for new Netflix drama Outlaw King takes place in the city.

The 37-year-old is not the first A-list star to bring some Hollywood glamour to Scotland with fellow actors such as Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson, Halle Berry and Scarlett Johansson all having spent some time filming here.

Most famously, Gibson won an Oscar for his role as William Wallace in the 1990s box office smash Braveheart.

Hollywood heart-throb Pitt sent heart rates in Glasgow through the roof when he was based in city to film Zombie flick World War Z in 2011, then later in the same year Oscar-winning actress Berry arrived to take part in the filming of sci-fi adventure Cloud Atlas.

A year later, Scarlett Johansson was unrecognisable as she played an extraterrestrial in the fantasy drama Under the Skin.

We take a look at some of the most notable big-screen hits to have been filmed in Scotland.

In a rundown of hit Scottish films there can only be one place to start.

Mel Gibson's 1995 epic Braveheart, telling the story of William Wallace, has become one of the most iconic films in history.

And the story of the Scots heroic fight against the oppressive English king and his army was not just a hit in Scotland but worldwide, winning five Oscars in 1996, including Best Picture.

Scenes were filmed in and around Glencoe, Glen Nevis and the Mamore mountains.

Even Australian actor Gibson's questionable Scottish accent couldn't dampen the enthusiasm for the film that went on to earn over £200m worldwide and became one of the highest grossing movies of the 1990s.

American actor Brad Pitt gave his Scottish fans a treat when he visited Glasgow in 2011 to film Zombie movie World War Z.

The presence of the heart-throb in Glasgow city centre caused commotion for weeks with eager fans joining press and paparazzi in their attempts to get a shot of the Fight Club and Snatch actor.

The location manager for the film said Glasgow had been chosen because of its architecture, wide roads, and grid layout.

Filming for World War Z also took place at Grangemouth Refinery. It was chosen for the length of the road which is crucial to the shot.

Under the Skin is a 2013 science fiction film directed and co-written by Jonathan Glazer loosely based on Michel Faber's 2000 novel of the same name.

Scarlett Johansson, twice voted sexiest woman in the world, was unrecognisable in her role as a murderous extraterrestrial maneater.

So much so that locals didn't know who she was when she approached them.

Much of the film was shot using hidden-camera techniques, which saw the thinly-disguised A-lister approaching ordinary men in the street to chat them up.

Her targets were only told afterwards that they had just been filmed with Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson found herself back Scotland last year in her role as Black Widow in the Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War and this time she brought some friends.

The film due to be released in 2018 stars a whole host of A-listers including Captain America Chris Evans, Incredible Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo and Thor star Chris Hemsworth.

They joined Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen and Vision actor Paul Bettany for the overnight filming in Edinburgh.

The village of St Abbs in the Borders was also on lockdown as Thor, Hulk and Black Widow filmed daytime scenes.

Hemsworth and Ruffalo delighted fans by stopping to sign autographs and take photos as they arrived back at their Edinburgh hotel after filming.

Author J K Rowling famously wrote much of the Harry Potter series in Edinburgh after moving to the city in 1995.

Scottish scenery can be spotted throughout the film versions of the popular children's books.

In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, The Glenfinnan Viaduct is used as the 'bridge to Hogwarts', where the Hogwarts Express makes its journey.

Other Scottish sites used in the film include Loch Eilt and Glencoe.

Glencoe was used to film multiple scenes. It is the location of Hagrid's Hut, the bridge leading to the entrance of Hogwarts, and some scenes were also filmed at the nearby lake.

Loch Eilt was used for exterior shots of the Hogwarts grounds and as the island location of Dumbledore's grave.

Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry visited in Glasgow in 2011 to film science-fiction film Cloud Atlas.

The actress, who won the Oscar for her role in Monsters Ball, joined in filming in city centre locations south of Blythswood Square and around Montrose Street.

Directed by the Wachowskis, who also directed The Matrix, and Tom Tykwer, Cloud Atlas, which also starred Tom Hanks, failed to perform as well at the box office as expected..

Costing more than £100m to make, it only earned a modest £9m on the first weekend of its release.

Classic British film The Wicker Man has been described as the "Citizen Kane of horror movies".

Starring Britt Eckland and Christopher Lee, the 1973 film was shot almost entirely in the small Scottish towns of Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright, and Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton in Ross-shire.

Many locals were used as extras for the low-budget horror mystery which centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl.

Other than the beautiful women and ingenious gadgets, stunning locations are a key ingredient in all James Bond films.

And Skyfall is no different as they used the spectacular Scottish Highlands location of Glen Etive as James Bond's ancestral home.

Britain's most suave secret agent visited the iconic Scottish locations for the 2012 film.

Scenes were also shot in Glencoe.

In one driving sequence filmed in the Highlands, the peaks of Buachaille Etive Mor and Buachaille Etive Beag even manage to upstage the secret agent's iconic Aston Martin DB5.

Other locations in Skyfall include Loch Craignish, Duart Castle and Eilean Donan Castle.
