A South Ayrshire man has scaled Britain's highest mountain to help raise funds for his favourite animal charity.

Scottish SPCA volunteer John Murasev took on the three-day challenge to scale Ben Nevis in order to secure £2430 for the group.

The 63-year-old from Ayr has carried out work for the charity for years and was keen to take part in the exhilarating challenge.

John said: "After my doctor ruled out a skydive I had to have another wee think to myself and figured that the Ben Nevis challenge was a shorter distance than the West Highland Way.

"I was really excited about doing it, even though it's a lot of hard work. We were in a group of 27 so I knew I'd have plenty of support going up."

He added: "Fundraising for the Scottish SPCA is important to me because there's no excuse for animal cruelty.

"You see these stories about the abuse that animals have suffered and it's just heartbreaking. I like to think the little that I can do makes a real difference to animals in need.

"I've done the Forth Rail Bridge Abseil a few times and now I've got this incredible event tucked under my belt I'll need to have a think about what's next.

"I love the adrenaline rush from these kind of activities and it's even better when it's for a worthy cause."
