South Ayrshire provost Helen Moonie has labelled the Barcelona terror attack "abhorrent and mindless" as she expressed her condolences to the victims.

Officials have confirmed at least 13 people have been killed and at least 100 injured after a van crashed into pedestrians on Las Ramblas in the heart of the city.

In a statement on the council's website, the provost urged people to show unity.

She said: "We cannot and must not let terrorists strike fear into the heart of our society and the freedom and liberties we enjoy.

"The abhorrent and mindless attacks in Spain were designed to do exactly that by targeting popular tourist areas at the height of the summer, so it's vital we stay strong and stand together.

"Once again, mums, dads, daughters, sons, brothers and sisters will not be returning home to their families and that is simply not acceptable. My deepest condolences to all those who have lost a loved one and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by these horrific acts."
