An official opening ceremony has been held for Ayrshire's new £20m leisure centre, five months after the public started using the facility.

The Portal based on High Street, Irvine, is a replacement for the Magnum Centre which shut down last year.

In addition to a gym, the Portal has space for football, basketball, athletics, hockey and swimming.

Paralympic gold medallist Danielle Joyce and silver medallist Abby Kane were on hand to open the facility.

Local groups and a number of leisure members have also been invited along to showcase everything the Portal has to offer.

Councillor Marie Burns said: "I'm really excited about this development now. I think people will be really surprised at the sheer size of it.

"The Portal will create a buzz in our town centre. Not only during the day but it will create a buzz in the evening and that can only have a positive knock-on effect on local business."
